ideas for club/project leaders
spark some discussion
Show young people in your club / project examples of the things that politicians and the media are
saying about
'yobs' and 'disrespect'.
See what they think.
Is everyone who wears a hood bad news?
Does a 'yob' have a reason for being the way they are?
Is it ever fair to call them a 'yob'?
What would make you respect/disrespect others?
encourage a response
voice
Firstly, you
could encourage young people to speak out about it - texting or emailing a message to be posted on the
campaign website.
face
If you can get photoconsent forms filled in then it would
be great if young people texted a photo of themselves plus a short comment. We can collect these together
in a high impact message to influential people.
project
Some of your group might like to keep a scrapbook or make a collage to record the way that the media describes young people.
Cut out headlines, pictures or whole articles, perhaps from a week or month's worth of papers. Then display your work at your club
or project and invite people to come and see it.
Get some coverage
Do good in the hood   We're used to seeing photos of young people in hoodies to illustrate articles about crime or antisocial behaviour. So why not try and destroy this stereotype by
sending positive photographs to your local newspaper?
If young people at your club or project are up for it, you could arrange to do some simple community service like a litter pick,
gardening for elderly members of the community, whatever captures your imagination. Wear your hoodies, take some snaps and send the story and pictures to the paper. Guaranteed media
coverage.
Use your own contacts or send the info to us and we'll send a press release out on the community newswire.
